Firstly, compression gear, much like any other clothing, is very subjective when it comes to sizing. The only way to know if it fits is to try it on. I'm 5 9" with shoes, 168 lbs. and I wear these in Medium. My legs are probably thicker than normal, especially looking at all of these guys wearing skinny pants and what not, but I don't have like NFL running back legs either. Compression gear is supposed to be tight and to me, really good compression gear won't just be tight, it will squeeze your muscles. So don't judge the item until you find the one that fits you.
Anyway, the main reason I got these was for some additional support/compression around my knees when I play basketball. Playing maybe 4-5 days/week and 2-3 hours each day, my knee gets tight. These come down almost to my ankles and ride up below my knees at their highest, so they stay where I want them to for the most part. I wear these almost exclusively for basketball now and I think they do make a small difference in terms of keeping my knee tight and warm. I also do a good variety of lower body lifts including: squats, lunges, calf raises, etc. and they are fine for those as well.
One small issue is that they do ride up in the crotch much more than my under armour compression shorts do. I have two pairs that do that and four pairs of UA shorts that do not. It gets uncomfortable very quickly, especially after I'm finished working out.
I wash them by soaking them in hot water and rinsing them in running water, then squeezing them out and hang drying them. Works for all of my compression gear and Nike elite socks. I would definitely look at getting another pair when my current pairs wear out.

A little tight in some areas if you know what i mean. but overall not a bad base layer. I wouldn't necessarily call them compression. the material is a bit thin but it works just fine.
